Aki Shiina (椎名 亜樹 Shiina Aki) is the main male protagonist of Sunohara-Sō no Kanrinin-san. He is currently a resident at Sunohara Inn who comes to Tokyo and enrolls himself to a nearby school.

Characteristics

Appearance

Aki is notably shorter and daintier than most boys his age, and stands shorter than the majority of the girls at the Sunohara Inn. He has chin-length black hair with strands and bangs parted to the middle, light green eyes, and fair skin. Because of his feminine appearance, he is often mistaken as a girl by the majority of people that he encounters.

As of chapter 52 in the manga, Aki has begun to develop more boyish characteristics and has actually grown in height slightly. By this point, he is now taller than his older sister and almost tall enough to stand face-to-face with Ayaka. He also tends to keep his hair shorter and neatly trimmed.

He is seen wearing a pale blue shirt underneath a short sleeved light cyan zipped- gym jacket with a pale grey hoodie with small pockets with zips at the bottom sides. He wears it with black shorts that has thick orange stripes at the sides, white ankle-socks and white velcro sneakers. In the manga, especially in the later chapters, he is seen wearing a hoodie with sweatpants.

Personality

Aki is an anxious, shy, yet determined and passionate teenager. Teased for the majority of his life for his small stature and feminine appearance, he decides to move to the Sunohara Inn in order to escape his overbearing sister and to become more "manly".

When around others, Aki is polite and patient, but can quickly lose his composure if thrown into stressful situations.

Plot

Aki moves into Sunohara-sou and he develops a crush on Ayaka Sunohara. As Ayaka is very intimate with him, he is often left in a confused state whether she likes him as a man or not, nevertheless he aims to man up more by helping her do chores around the home.

He is also seen getting into sticky situations with other members of the home die to his kind heartedness.

Etymology

• The name Aki means "second, Asia" (亜) (a) and "tree" (樹) (ki).
• Aki's surname Shiina means "oak, mallet" (椎) (shii) and "name, noted, distinguished, reputation" (名) (na).
